(West Haven, CT.) On Saturday evening March 28th, New England Auto Racing Hall of Fame member Billy Greco will host a NEAR racing movie party at the Polish-American Club located on 194 West Spring Street in West Haven, Connecticut.
Things get underway at 5pm with tickets available at the door.
The event serves as an official fundraiser for the New England Antique Racers (NEAR), which administers the New England Auto Racing Hall of Fame.
Highlights of the evening include a display of vintage racing videos from a variety of the regions raceways, many-of-which have not been viewed for years. Also on display will be photos including many rare images from the early days of the sport. Raffles and door prizes, autograph sessions, along with a buffet-style menu of home-cooked Italian, American, & Polish cuisine complete the evening agenda.
“This is a way to get everyone together for an enjoyable night,” states Greco who was inducted into the HOF in 1999. “All proceeds benefit the New England Antique Racers which have presented the Hall of Fame Inductions every year since 1998. It’s a great cause and something that we all strongly-support.”
It’s expected that an assortment of Hall of Famers along with other notable racing personalities will attend.
Greco, whose career began in 1951, remains one of the most endearingly-popular competitors in New England Modified racing history. He established himself in the sport early-on, notching track championships at West Haven in 1955, and again in ’56 and ’58. He won Saturday night championships at Riverside Park in 1965 and 67, and also won several Tuesday night track championships at The Park. His combined feature win total at Riverside is 68 including five 500-lap team races.
His success was not limited to just driving for Harvey Tattersall’s United Stock Car Racing Club. Greco was a charter member of the All Star Racing League and had success on both dirt and asphalt. In the late-1960s he tried his hand with NASCAR. Later in his career he joined the SNYRA and competed at the Danbury Racearena. It’s estimated that he won over 300 features during his career. Billy also has the distinction as the only driver to have won a feature event on all-eight oval tracks that once existed in Connecticut; Stafford Speedway, Thompson Speedway, Waterford Speedbowl, Plainville Stadium, Danbury Racearena, Cherry Park in Avon, West Haven Speedway and Candlelight Stadium in Bridgeport.
A non-profit endeavor, since 1998 NEAR has inducted 196 individuals into the New England Auto Racers Hall Of Fame, which is administered by the New England Antique Racers. Some notable inductees include Richie Evans, Ron Bouchard, Bugs Stevens, Rene Charland, Pete Hamilton, Fred DeSarro, Ed Flemke, Sr. and Billy Greco among others.
